La Crosse, Wis – Despite the hard rain and muddy trails, members of the La Crosse Squadron provided first aid and trail assistance to runners participating in the River to Ridge Five Mile race. The race, a community event sponsored by WisCorps, challenged runners to race from downtown La Crosse all the way through the city and finish atop the bluffs that run along the east side of the city.
Due to the challenge of the course, CAP was asked to assist with the race. CAP personnel provided communications, manned water stations, and staffed checkpoints along the bluff trails. As the race went on rain moved in and the trail conditions deteriorated. CAP personnel stationed along the trail ended up having to assist multiple runners with climbing up the trail due to the slick and muddy conditions.
The cadets and officers who participated demonstrated the valuable asset that a CAP unit can be to a community. Able to provide a team of people trained in first aid and communications, and who operated at no cost to the event, CAP fulfilled its role of providing service to its community.
